Every summer, home improvement gurus come out with scores of lists of different summer maintenance projects that “must” be done to ensure that your home and property stay in good working order. While these projects are certainly good ideas, they come at a time when most homeowners just want to relax, go to the lake or just spend time with family. Fortunately, there are some summer home maintenance projects that aren’t totally necessary, so save yourself some time by eliminating the following:
- Scrubbing the grill. When it comes time to break out the barbeque grill and start prepping for summer entertainment, don’t worry about bringing out that wire cleaning brush to scrub down the grates. Traditional wire brushes can be hazardous to your health due to the possibility of loose bristles dislodging and getting into your food. If you really want to clean those grates, go the easier route of putting them into the oven and using the self-cleaning mode to burn off all the gunk. Follow that with a quick rinse and a little cooking oil to keep food from sticking.
- Weeding the garden. Nobody likes the hot, sweaty task of weeding garden and flower beds. Mulch is a much better option. Lay landscaping fabric, followed by a two-inch layer of mulch, around your plants and flowers, which will block the weeds while also helping with water retention.
- Scrubbing down the deck. Another area where a scrub brush isn’t necessary is your deck. Instead of getting on your hands and knees to tackle the dirt and grime with a scrub brush, use a leaf blower and power washer to do the work for you. The leaf blower will get rid of loose dirt and debris on your deck, driveway, gutters and other outdoor surfaces. Follow up with the power washer to remove any remaining residue.
- Window washing. Cleaning all your windows at once, inside and out, can be a daunting task – one that you don’t need to worry about this summer. Luckily, since most of the accumulated grime is on the outside of the windows, focusing on cleaning that area will make a huge difference. As for the window screens, there’s no need to mess with taking them out for cleaning. A simple once-over with a looped microfiber cloth will get rid of the dust and give you the same results.
