Did you know that 61% of low-income families have no books at all in their homes for their children? A local organization has a mission of doing something about this need, and Muth & Company Roofing is helping! On March 11, members of the Muth team attended The Derby 2016, a special fundraiser for The 2nd & 7 Foundation. Muth & Company was also a Race Sponsor for the event. The Foundation’s goal is to “tackle illiteracy” in central Ohio and around the nation by providing free books and positive role models to kids in need, while encouraging young athletes of the community to “pay it forward.”

Books & Bowties

The Derby was held at the EXPRESS LIVE! arena in downtown Columbus. The horse racing theme included a fun evening of bow ties and big hats, with VIP mingling, wagering on “live” horse races, unique auction items and more. With all proceeds benefiting The 2nd & 7 Foundation, this year’s Derby raised over $110,000 for the mission to promote reading by providing free books and positive role models to kids in need. This means over 11,000 new books will be given to kids in need!

Muth & Company acknowledges all of the volunteers and sponsors that made this evening possible, and looks forward to more opportunities to help this and other organizations that benefit our Columbus neighbors!

About The 2nd & 7 Foundation

The 2nd & 7 Foundation was founded in 1999 by three former OSU football players – Luke Fickell, Ryan Miller and Mike Vrabel – who wanted to continue to give back to their community. The foundation was born from funds generated by the first annual FUNdamental football camp. The camp generated enough money to buy books to hand out to seven different second grade classrooms. Using a down & distance term used in football, the foundation became known as The 2nd & 7 Foundation. Since 1999, The Foundation has given away over 100,000 books to kids in need all across the country.

The “Tackling Illiteracy” reading program began in central Ohio and is now being implemented in communities all over the nation. As a part of this program, college or high school student-athletes visit second graders in local elementary schools to read to them, talk about the importance of their education and give every child a free book to take home. The focus is on schools with high populations of students on free or reduced lunch plans or communities that need it the most.
