When you think of storm chasers, you probably picture crazy storm enthusiasts chasing down tornadoes. When it comes to roofing, however, storm chasers come after the storm, and often mean bad news for homeowners.
How the scam works
Many of these roofers travel all over the country. They target areas that have been hit by passing storms and have wind or hail damage. They know that insurance companies will pay out for roof repairs. Storm chasers often don’t care about their reputations since they won’t be around long enough address any problems. There is no motivation for them to produce quality work.
The storm chasers’ mode of operation
Storm chasers will often walk storm-affected neighborhoods. They put out door hangers or approach homeowners to hand out leaflets or offer free inspections. Sadly, anxious homeowners take advantage of these “special deals.” What they don’t know is that many times these roofers only put in a minimal amount of effort using inferior materials. They ignore any underlying issues. This frequently results in the roof having to be replaced five to seven years down the road.
Avoid the scam
The best way to avoid a roofing scam is to know the signs. Thoroughly research any company you’re considering hiring. Ask to see a license and proof of insurance. Check with your local licensing department or building agency to make sure it is valid. Check with your local BBB to see how long the company has been in business. Ask for a physical address. If they’ll only give you a P.O. box, that’s a good sign that they’re not a legitimate Columbus, OH, roofing company.
It’s also a smart idea to get a list of references for jobs that the roofing company has completed in your area. Talk with previous customers in person to determine their satisfaction with the work performed.
