It’s hard to see gutter blockage and damage from the ground. But don’t overlook the spring maintenance task of gutter cleaning and repairing.
If not properly maintained, however, blocked and overflowing gutters can cause damage to your roof, fascia, soffits and even the foundation of your home. Take the proper steps to make sure your gutter system is functioning correctly.
Clean debris off the roof and out of gutters
Wind and storms blow all kinds of debris into your gutters. Before you start cleaning your gutters, make sure the roof is clear. Debris on it will be washed down into your clean gutters during the next storm. Using a sturdy step ladder or extension ladder, clean out leaves and small twigs by hand. Be sure to use work gloves. Or you can use a gutter scoop or other gutter cleaning tool.
Before rinsing out gutters, we recommend you remove the elbow from the drop. This stops the debris from getting into the downspout or underground drains, causing major damming. Use a trigger-style nozzle that can be easily hooked onto the edge of the gutter as you move the ladder along.
Check for damage
While you are cleaning gutters, keep an eye out for holes and other damage like sagging, corrosion, and loose or missing fasteners. Caulk small holes, and tighten or replace fasteners. If, however, the damage is extensive and you need gutter replacement, call Muth & Company Roofing for the best service and quality products.
