What Causes Granule Loss on Your Roof’s Shingles?

Granule Loss On Your Roof

There are several factors that can cause granule loss on your roof’s shingles.

While the accumulation of granules in Columbus, OH, gutters and downspouts can be concerning, it doesn’t automatically mean that your roof is damaged. Here are some of the most common causes.

Normal Loss from New Shingles

If you recently replaced your roof and see a pile of asphalt granules on the ground below your downspout, don’t worry; this is normal. Granules get loosened from the shingle’s surface by roofers walking on it during the installation process, and are then washed off the roof and down into the gutters.

If you look at the roof and see no visible signs of granule loss, then this is probably the cause.

Loss Due to Aging

If you find small amounts of granules in the gutters, but close inspection reveals uniform weathering and no significant bald spots, this is likely normal loss due to aging. As shingles age and lose granules, they weaken from exposure to the sun and weather and lose their flexibility.

This means the shingles are more fragile and prone to breaking, so avoid walking on the roof.

Loss from Hail Damage

If you have recently had strong storms and hail in your area, keep a close eye out for granule loss. This is one of the first indications that your shingles may have been damaged.

The impact of hailstones hitting the roof can cause splits, cracks, pitting and bruising, along with the granule loss. Depending on the severity of the damage, you may be able to file an insurance claim to replace damaged shingles.
